The Greatest
Of course in rememberance of 2009 there was a lot of coverage of Michael Jackson and his brothers even have their own show (from viewing it, my opinion is that they are not too money hungry). Michael Jackson: This Is It
...yes it is sad that he is gone, but I was surprised that the Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur had plenty of documentaries of their history on cable channels. It stirred up a lot of old debate in my circles, such as who is the greatest rapper of all time?
Soulja Boy Done Tell Em
Soulja Boy done tell em what? That is what I pondered at a child's birthday party in 2008 as soccer mom and her preteen, excuse me, tween daughters did that dance that will remain unamed. This was probably the first sign that I had outgrown hiphop. This boy is rich, but I consider his flow slightly "dumbed-down". I now have flashbacks of my father's distaste for the Wu Tang in the early 90's. In my generation's defense they had what we like to call skills. Is hip hop dead like Nas said? Oh wait a second, he recorded an album afterward. Anyway, I watched some of the New Years countdowwn on 106 and Party and wondered (1) where's Free and AJ and (2) besides Omarion and Mario, who the hell are these people performing? Why did TI have to get locked up (ok. He did some crazy stuff), what happened to the Ruff Ryders (um, DMX is where again doing what?) and why am I one of the few my age who cares about MC Lyte. It has become more clear to me that I am at the stage my father and many "old schoolers" were and still are in when a new generation takes over. It astonishes me that some want to say they are tired of Eve, Nas, Lil Kim, 50, and even in rare moments - Jay-Z (seems impossible for him). So as a bunch of people were proud to believe the that saying "ZOOOOM" like a 5 year old was cool, and the pressures of radio almost tricked me into liking one of his last songs, I will keep the hope that it is not just my age that makes hip hop seem slightly idiotic.
Then again, we have Drake...thank you Jesus!
